WEEK ELEVEN - MAY 2002
May 2 - When mom gets sick, it's Super Dad to the rescue - or not.
I really hope that Cheryl doesn't get sick again for a long, long time. She was really sick with some sort of flu thing last week. And you know all those million things a mother/wife does around the house every day to keep everyone's life sane? Well, I tried to fill in.

You would think that me, being Super Dad, could pick up all the slack for a few days.

Now, if you're a mom, you are probably rolling on the floor laughing at this thought.

And if you're a dad, you are probably thinking that you do a great job filling in for mom when she's sick. Ask your wife for an honest evaluation next time she is bed-ridden for a few days.

Well, we all made it through the week, and Cheryl now has to catch up on everything I didn't do while she was sick.

May 3 - Mom, dad, could you just give me a little space?
Joshua was quite a fusser today, and after trying every trick in the book, I finally just set him down on the couch in his favorite spot. He immediately quieted down and sat there for the next hour entertaining himself.

Go figure.

May 4 - Family gatherings.
Some people may view family gatherings as a drag, but hey, it's a perfect time for husbands and wives to spend some time together without the baby. We showed up at my parents' house for an evening of family fun, and Joshua was immediately taken off our hands. Everyone was signing up to hold him next. Cheryl and I got to sit on the couch together and talk, and we got to eat hot food simultaneously. So if you ever feel like you need an evening with your spouse, arrange a large family party and enjoy!
May 5 - Who gets to carry the baby?
It seems like whenever we go somewhere as a family, Cheryl always is the one to hold the baby, or carry him in the sling. I've figured out that, since I don't get to spend as much time with him, going out should be a time when I get to hold him. So I started this today at church. We arrived, and as Cheryl was putting him in the sling, I stepped in and offered my services. Cheryl reluctantly gave him up (what, is she afraid I'll lose him or something?), and I got to spend the next hour-and-a-half with my baby.

Any dads who feel like they don't get enough time with their baby should speak up and be the baby-carrier during family outings.

May 6 - Starbucks with the baby.
I guess a dad with a baby in a sling is an unusual sight in public. Me and the baby stopped by Starbucks for some caffeine, and everyone looked at me like they'd never seen a male with a baby in a sling before.
May 7 - The morning diaper.
Tired of trying to change diapers while your baby screams? I found the perfect time to volunteer for diaper duty. Joshua wakes up very happy. And of course, he's soaked. I like to jump in and enjoy a good 5 to 10 minutes of playful diaper time in the mornings because he just smiles and coo's his whole way through. And he is never poopy first thing in the morning.
May 8 - Poopy diapers, on the other hand . . .
There is just not anything fun about changing a poopy diaper. But I have the perfect way for dads to get out of doing this duty. Moms, don't read this:
Dads, when you put on a clean diaper, put it on too lose. Do this anytime you change a diaper. Then, when baby leaks all over, your wife will blame you for not putting the diaper on right. Do this enough times, and you will be banned from diaper duty.

Now of course, I've never done this, being Super Dad and all. This is just something I've heard other dads do.
