WEEK TWENTY-SEVEN - AUGUST 2002
My wise wife.
Our nighttime routine, or lack thereof, has suddenly hit the fan. Joshua used to go down for bed around 9 or so, and would wake up a couple times to nurse. Last night, however, his teeth were really bugging him and he was up all night. Of course, I didn't find this out until the next morning (I think I would actually sleep through World War III).
Cheryl told me, "All he did all night was cry, cry, cry! And all YOU did was sleep, sleep, sleep!" I kinda felt bad (not really) and I said, "Next time wake me up so I can help." Cheryl replied, "Yeah, right. And what exactly do you think you can do?"
I love the way my wife thinks. She is so wise. I hope I at least got points for OFFERING to help.
Our new nighttime routine.
It seems our new evening routine is NOT exactly what we want. Joshua has started staying up late. I mean REALLY late. We all went to bed last night at 11, but he stayed up laughing, crawling, and playing all over the bed.
I admit, it was fun for a while. Spending a whole hour just doing nothing but watching Joshua, talking to him and each other. But midnight rolled around, and it was no longer fun anymore. I am not a night person, and so I bailed and went to sleep. Cheryl hung in there until 1 am when Joshua finally ran out of steam.
Actually, I didn't totally bail on them. I was still serving as the bedrail for my side of the bed, so I WAS doing something.
We haven't really tried to set up a routine, because things always just seemed to run pretty smoothly. But now he has started staying up late EVERY night for the past week. It must be that he misses his wonderful dad so much during the day that he has to stay up all night. Cheryl and I are missing our quiet evenings together, but I guess if we wanted to be alone we wouldn't have had kids.
Every night at 10 pm when he is rolling around the living room floor, I think to myself, "Alright, tomorrow he is going to bed at 8 whether he likes it or not." Of course, we aren't going to force anything, but hopefully we can coax him back into an earlier bedtime again.
A mother's amnesia.
I asked Cheryl how last night went. How many times did the baby wake up? Did she get enough sleep?
She answered, "I don't really remember. I guess if I don't remember it being a bad night, it must have been a good night."
Hopefully Cheryl will have many nights to come that she "doesn't remember".
"Now why can't THIS happen at 8:00 instead of MIDNIGHT!"
