When in doubt – read the instructions!

The nice thing about the world we live in is that if you don’t know much about a certain subject, chances are that somebody does, and that somebody has usually written a book! This is why I found myself in the sports/fitness section of Border’s Books… Turns out there are dozens of books on training for a triathlon. There are books that offer 28 week training programs, 24 and 18 week training programs, a 16 week training program with very nice color photos… Problem is, I don’t have that much time! Luckily, I found a singular book with a 12 week program (or is that a 12 STEP program!) A quick check of my calendar to verify… Yes, exactly 12 ½ weeks until Ironman. That gives me the weekend to read the book, and I can start my training next week! One might ask, “it’s just swimming, biking, and running… how complicated can that be?” Well, apparently it’s complicated enough to fill 324 pages of instructions! For starters, according to chapter 1, if you just try to swim, bike and run A LOT, you will probably get hurt. Proper equipment and training techniques are important, as well as nutrition and strength exercises. I guess it’s time to dust off my weight set.
