"CANDLE FUMES"

CANDLE FUMES
"My day sitter burns a big candle in her home while watching my son and four other children. I have heard somewhere that candles can expend some harmful fumes or smell? Is this true?"

I love to have candles burning around the house, and I even have one on my desk at my office – it seems to have a calming effect. However, many candlewicks will contain lead and will give off harmful fumes and soot while burning. Here are a few tips on how to ensure that your candle-burning experience is safe:

  • Candles poured into jars don't get enough oxygen and do cause toxic black soot
  • Candles with metal core wicks release lead and other harmful toxins
  • Avoid high erratic flames and candles not burning evenly as they emit soot - keep candles away from drafts and make sure wicks are erect and trimmed to 1/4 inch

It is important to buy candles that are safe. You can find “natural” beeswax candles that will not contain any harmful ingredients.
