"MOM TIRED OF ALL NIGHT NURSING"

MOM TIRED OF ALL NIGHT NURSING
"My husband and I are barely sleeping with our 8-month-old son. We have a family bed philosophy, which worked great with our daughter, who is now 3+. She now sleeps in her own bed, but joins us at night when she wakes up and wants to be with us. We're not having as much luck with our son in finding a peaceful nighttime routine. The problem is that he wakes every hour or so, sits up or begins to cry. Now I am exhausted. A friend suggested that I sleep somewhere else in the house for a few nights, and let just my husband, who obviously can't nurse him (and we don't give him a bottle), try to comfort him and get him back to sleep. This would hopefully teach him that he's not alone, but that he's not going to be fed all night long either. Please let me know what you think of this solution, or if you have another suggestion. ”

Many parents are hesitant to try this approach because they are worried that it falls into the “cry-it-out” category. I say give it a try – your instincts will tell you if it’s not working. Many babies quickly learn to be soothed by daddy with just a minimal amount of fussiness. Remember, the research (which is reviewed in our soon to be released Sleep Book) that shows prolonged crying for babies is harmful and also shows that crying while being held is not harmful.
