AskDrSears.com - FAQ "MILK SUPPLY PROBLEMS"

MILK SUPPLY PROBLEMS
"I have a 4 month old and have attempted to breastfeed. Unfortunately, my supply is so low that it takes me all day to pump 4 oz. What can I do to help increase the milk flow? I am so discouraged and depressed that I'm seriously contemplating totally stopping."

It sounds like you really want to keep breastfeeding, and I hope these suggestions can help. First, it is important to know that the amount that you can pump often is very different than how much baby can get by nursing directly. Many moms breastfeed successfully, yet are unable to pump more than an ounce or two. How your baby is growing is a better indicator of how good your milk supply is. Besides the tips on increasing your milk supply (that you can read by clicking here) you also probably should get personalized help from a certified lactation consultant. An LC can give you the “hands-on” help you seem to need to evaluate the baby’s latch, check your supply, and suggest which herbs or medications might be best for you. Don’t forget that stress doesn’t help the milk supply, so you need to relax as much as possible. Click here for help in finding a lactation consultant.
