PEDIATRIC NEWS UPDATES
Updates from June 2005<
June 21 - Children need one hour of exercise each day.
Atlanta – Children should get an hour of exercise over the course of each day, a panel of obesity experts has concluded, seeking to end confusion on the matter. A CDC panel has reviewed numerous studies on the subject to sift through conflicting advice on the subject – 27 different groups have their own recommendations.
I am glad this is making the news, but there is something about it that bother’s me. It is a shame that we need a government funded committee to tell us how much exercise our kids need. I’ll tell you how much they need: come home from school, and go outside and play… then come in for dinner! That’s how much they need! We are in trouble if we have to tell our kids to exercise until the 60 minute timer goes ding before they go back to playing video games. Sure, my kids (mainly my 7-year old Jonathan) love to play video games, and would play them all day if allowed. We just try to set aside some time each day for fun, physical activity.
