PEDIATRIC NEWS UPDATES
Updates from September 2006
Sept. 06 - Eating Fish Lowers Kidney Cancer
A new study in Sweden showed that women who eat FATTY fish, at least once a
week, like salmon, herring, sardines, and mackerel showed a lower risk of kidney caner.
Lean fish like tuna and cod did not show this benefit.
Dr. Sears Comments: We've known for many years that the healthy omega-3 fat in fish helps
prevent many diseases, most notably cardiovascular disease, and this is just one more to check off
the list. But be careful - mackerel, while high in healthy fat, can have high levels of mercury.
Wild Salmon is probably the safest and healthiest. Farmed Salmon (which is what you would buy in most
stores) can be contaminated with cancer-causing chemicals, as we've reported last year. Click

Sept. 06 - ADHD Linked to Lead and Prenatal Smoking
A new study shows that nearly 1/3 of ADHD cases may be caused by exposure to environmental toxins,
most notably tobacco chemicals while in the womb and lead during early childhood.
Dr. Sears Comments: This isn't really surprising news, as everyone knows tobacco chemicals can affect a
fetus's developing brain. But what is very interesting about this study is that medical experts have always thought
that low levels of lead in a child's body wasn't anything to worry about, and that as long as a child tested lower
than 10 micrograms per deciliter, parents shouldn't worry. This new study shows that lead levels even lower than 10
can lead to ADHD. This may prompt a change in what levels the government deems acceptable for lead screening tests
for kids. Click here to read about how to "get the lead out".
